Having worked on a number of pipe organs professionally, I have seen how horrendously difficult it can be to modify an instrument when several ranks share a common windchest and when everything is hard-wired together. In order to facilitate the inevitable rearrangement of ranks within and between divisions in my residence instrument as it grows, all stops are being installed on individual windchests, and each windchest's internal wiring leads to a number of 25-pin jacks; the relay banks have matching 25-pin plugs, so that the entire instrument can be wired using nothing but inexpensive, readily-available computer printer cables! This also allows for the easy addition/removal of custom-wired adapters that, for example, would allow an 8' Oboe stop in the Swell to also serve as a 4' pedal stop, without the need to throw the Sw-Gt 4' coupler; the adapters contain diodes that allow the DC signal current to flow just one way, preventing unwanted signal flow out of the inputs of the adapter.
