This 5-string violin, Giraffe, commissioned by Chelle Fulk, has several unusual features. While the overall length of this instrument is the same as on my other electric violins, the shell is three inches shorter than normal and the neck three inches longer (providing easy access to the high end of the fingerboard). This violin is tuned in major sixths instead of fifths, producing a very wide pitch range. In addition, lighting is integrated into the end of the fingerboard as well as the edges of the bout and the underside of the spine, and the shell is lacquered with blue-purple color-changing paint. Several hand-brushed aluminum plates serve to conceal the internal circuitry that drives the lights.
