Frets are available for an additional $600. Fretted instruments include 29 mandolin-height frets that are measured out, sawed, and installed with extreme care entirely by hand; this allows you to play in-tune all the way to the end of the fingerboard and with every note having the resonance of an open string. A special adjustable nut allows the frets to be "tuned" so that you can compensate for the different characteristics of various types of strings.
Frets will shift all your fingerings 1/4 position towards the scroll (assuming that you play like a guitar player and depress the strings behind the frets as opposed to directly on top of them). This is enough to drive many experienced violin and viola players mad, and is primarily popular with guitar players who are crossing over into the world of bowed strings.
