The base price is determined by the type of instrument you're ordering (violin or viola) and how many strings it will have. If you choose no optional features, the base price will get you a tubular electric instrument of my "classic" design.

A 4/4 violin starts at $1900 for a standard-pitch (E-A-D-G) or low-pitch (A-D-G-C) 4-string, $2000 for a standard-pitch (E-A-D-G-C) 5-string, and $2050 for a low-pitch (A-D-G-C-F) 5-string. 6- and 7-string instruments are available at additional cost, and require some alterations of my basic design; call for more information. I do not make fractional-size violins (although oversized violins are possible and are priced as violas).

Violas start at $2100 for a standard-pitch (A-D-G-C) or high-pitch (E-A-D-G) 4-string, $2200 for a standard-pitch (E-A-D-G-C) 5-string, and $2250 for a low-pitch (A-D-G-C-F) 5-string. 6- and 7-string instruments are available at additional cost, and require some alterations of my basic design; call for more information. As viola scaling and measurements are highly variable, I will construct your instrument based on a number of measurements that I will ask you to obtain from your favorite (most comfortable) acoustic viola.

Custom tunings (utilizing strings that will produce the desired pitches under the tensions they were designed for) are available at additional cost; call for details. One particularly interesting example of this is the "octave violin" which plays a full octave lower than my standard 5-string and thus has the full range of a cello (see the Audio page for a short recording); another example is a fretted 6-string I created that is tuned entirely in Cs and Gs and thus has tremendous sympathetic resonance.

Note that all my instruments use the same acoustic-sounding adjustable-timbre bridge pickup that I make myself by hand, so that every instrument has exceptional tone, whether it's a sleek classic model or a highly-customized showpiece.
